Tips How to Clean Your Yellowed Plastic Items


While you enjoy the sunshine sitting on your white plastic chair in your garden, the colour of the chair changes. It isn't a joke, sometimes white plastic items turns yellow because of extensive sun exposure. Of course, the age of the plastic items can also cause colour change. Although, you won't be able to restore the origin condition of the chair, you can lighten it and improves its appearance without using house cleaning services.

  1. Place the plastic item, in this case the chair, in a container of soapy water and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
  2. Take a nylon scouring brush to clean the plastic. Try to rub as hard as you can.
  3. Once you've cleaned the chair, rinse it well under running water.
  4. Apply hydrogen peroxide on the plastic and scrub with a brush. You can allow the peroxide to act for up to two hours, before taking down to scrubbing. The peroxide will lighten significantly the chair.
  5. Mix 4 tbsp of bleach and 4 cups of warm water ans soak the plastic item in the cleaning solution for about an hour. Then rinse well under cool running water.
  6. Allow the plastic item to air dry. If you didn't get rid of the unpleasant yellow colour, repeat the soaking process.

Remember to put rubber gloves when using hydrogen peroxide. In case, you can't lighten your white plastic items yourself, you can hire house cleaning services to do it for you or consider painting them. You should know that some yellowing is irreversible.
