How to Make a Carpet Deodorizer

An unpleasant odor may occur even when you take extra cares to keep your carpet clean. Store-bought deodorizers neutralize odors pretty well, but they can be expensive and also may include chemicals that you may not want in your home. You can make your own carpet deodorizer using natural products which are less expensive and don't contain dangerous chemicals. Using this homemade deodorizer regularly helps keep your carpet fresh, leaving a clean scent in your home.

Instructions
  1. Vacuum the carpet well before using any deodorizer. This is a basic rule when it comes to carpet cleaning.
  2. Mix 1 part of cornmeal with 2 parts of baking soda in a bowl. You can make an alternative solution by mixing 1 part of borax with 2 parts of cornstarch. Add 3 drops of your favourite essential oil for a pleasant scent. Keep in mind that coloured oils may stain your carpet so avoid using them as carpet cleaning professionals suggest.
  3. Sprinkle a thin layer of the deodorizer on the carpet, so the carpet is still visible. A thicker layer will make it difficult to remove the powder from the carpet.
  4. Allow your homemade freshener to sit on the carpet overnight or for at least three hours. Keep walking on the carpet to a minimum while the deodorizer is on it, or best do not walk at all to prevent pushing the powder deep into the carpet fibers.
  5. Vacuum the carpet two or three times to remove the deodorizer completely. Change the vacuum bag to prevent powder from leaking next time you vacuum.
